Before the Disaster
In a major disaster, emergency workers may not be able to reach
everyone right away, and in some cases it may take 3 or more days
for help to arrive. What would you do if you had no electricity,
no gas, no water and no telephone service? Having a plan and emergency
supplies for your family and their needs will help ensure their
safety and comfort during these difficult times. The following is
a listed of suggested disaster supplies:
Disaster Supply Kit
- Water - at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days
- Food - at least enough for 3 to 7 days
- non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
- foods for infants or the elderly
- snack foods
- non-electric can opener
- cooking tools / fuel
- paper plates / plastic utensils
- Blankets / Pillows, etc.
- Clothing - seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes
- First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs
- Special Items - for babies and the elderly
- Toiletries - hygiene items
- Moisture wipes
- Flashlight / Batteries
- Radio - Battery operated and NOAA weather radio
- Cash - Banks and ATMs may not be open or available for extended
periods.
- Keys
- Toys, Books and Games
- Important documents - in a waterproof container
- insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social
Security card, etc.
- document all valuables with videotape if possible
- Tools - keep a set with you during the storm
- Vehicle fuel tanks filled
Pet a Pet Plan
The best way to protect your family from the effects of a disaster
is to have a disaster plan. If you are a pet owner, that plan must
include your pets. Being prepared can save their lives.
If you evacuate your home, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS BEHIND!
Pets most likely cannot survive on their own; and if by some remote
chance they do, you may not be able to find them when you return.
Pet care items
- proper identification / immunization records
- ample supply of food and water
- a carrier or cage
- medications
- muzzle and leash
