72 million adults in the U.S. are obese.

Obesity is excess body fat. A person becomes obese by eating too much food and not getting enough physical activity.

Overweight and obesity in children are significant public health problems as well.  It’s an epidemic that’s affected the entire country. In every state, more than 15 percent of adults are obese, and in twelve states, adult obesity rates are now 30 percent or more. Missouri is one of those states and Warren County’s obesity rate according to the most recent data from CDC is at 31%.  The County Level Study (2007) revealed that 82% of adults in Warren County ate less than 5 fruits and vegetables per day. These are the role models for our children.  As obesity rates in adults continue to rise across Missouri we can anticipate the same will be true for our younger residents as well.

What can you do? Help fight the epidemic.

• Eat more fruits and vegetables and fewer foods high in fat and sugar.

• Drink more water and less sugary drinks.

• Get more physical activity.

• Watch less television.

• Support breastfeeding.

• Promote policies and programs in your community that make healthy choices easy choices.

The program, available through the National Association of Counties (NACo) and CVS Caremark, kicked off in March. The Prescription Discount Card is not insurance. Primary users of the card are people without prescription coverage, although persons with insurance might also benefit on prescriptions not covered by their current plan. Discounts have been averaging 24% across the country per NACo. There are over 60,000 participating pharmacies nationwide.

County residents are encouraged to pick up a discount card and begin saving money immediately. There is no enrollment process or any fees required to participate. Cards are available in English and Spanish at the Warren County Health Department, 104 W. Booneslick, Suite H, Warrenton, in the lower level of the county courthouse.  They are also available on line at www.caremark.com/naco. Program operated by CVS Caremark. This is NOT insurance. Discounts are only available at any participating pharmacy.

(RSMo 307.178 & 307.182)

Missouri’s booster seat law, effective August 2006, requires children who have outgrown a child safety seat to be secured in a booster seat while traveling in a motor vehicle. The fine for violating this law is $50.00 plus court costs, which far exceeds the cost of many booster seats. Missouri law now requires:

  • Children less than 4 years old or less than 40 pounds to be in an appropriate child safety seat;
  • Children 4 years and older to be secured in a booster seat until they turn 8 years old, unless they reach 80 pounds or 4’9” tall before that birthday; and
  • Children weighing more than 80 pounds or taller than 4’9” are required to be secured by a vehicle safety belt or booster seat appropriate for that child.
